How to Stay Young at Heart

(CARLSBAD, CA) – The famous comedian, Bob Hope, used to say that, “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.” So, how close does your birthday cake resemble that statement?

Whether you already consider yourself a “senior” adult or you are slowly approaching that milestone marker, it’s time to start thinking about how to maintain the fountain of youth into your elder years.

How do you maintain your vitality into your 70s, 80s, and beyond? There isn’t a magic cure, but there are quite a few proactive steps that you can take.

  • Get moving. We all know the benefits that exercise holds for your heart, not to mention your waistline. But, did you know that exercise actually helps to stimulate your brain waves? Research indicates that belly fat is connected to a tripled increase in dementia. So, keep your belly trim, and you’re that much closer to keeping your quick wit as well.
  • Buff up. Strength training can increase bone density, decrease body fat, and improve posture, balance, and mobility. Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett suggests incorporating some type of strength-training exercise at least two days per week.
  • Stretch. As we age, our muscles and joints become stiff. The only way to counteract this process is with regular stretching. Always stretch when your muscles are warm, such as the end of a cardiovascular activity. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds, without bouncing.
  • Watch your diet. A recent study at St. Louis University shows that the combination of regular exercise and healthy diet not only leads to weight loss, but also lowers T3 production. The decreased levels of this thyroid hormone helps slow the aging process.
  • Get your ZZZzzzs. Get a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep every night to keep your body functioning at full capacity. You’re more likely to make poor eating choices when you’re sleep deprived. In addition, sleep is essential to rebuilding your muscles and skin cells.
  • Drink up! H2O that is. Keep your body hydrated and your skin will look firmer and plumper, reducing the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. Aim for eight cups of water daily.

Growing older isn’t an option…it’s inevitable. As we grow older, it can be a time for contemplation of life’s accomplishments, appreciation for what we’ve gained, or motivation to meet new challenges. Whatever your goals or dreams are for the latter years of your life, don’t neglect your health and well-being. Try just one or two of the tips above and see how much better you feel.
