Take the Stress Out of Your Holidays

(CARLSBAD, CA) – The house needs to be cleaned and decorated. Relatives and friends are coming from out-of-town next week. There are gifts to buy, cookies to bake, and parties to plan. With all of these tasks on your to-do list, it’s no wonder that the holidays can be the most stressful time of the year.

Let’s say that you decide to make your holidays stress-free this year, or at least to minimize the stress as much as possible. How will you make that happen? What steps should you take?   • Plan ahead. Take a look at your calendar now. Decide upon specific days for shopping and baking.
  • Delegate. When it comes to preparing the house for company, assign a job to each family member. Even young children can help by picking up toys.
  • Stick to a budget. The American Bankers Association says that it takes credit card users an average of four months to pay off their holiday bills. Don’t fall into that trap! Decide how much money you can afford to spend on each person’s gift and stick to it.
  • Count your blessings. Take a moment with your family to remember the good things that have happened this past year.
  • Take a break. Schedule a pedicure to top-off your long day of shopping. Soak in a hot tub while the holiday ham is in the oven. Just a few minutes to yourself can make a big difference.
  • Just say no. You don’t have to attend every holiday party, just because you’re invited. And you don’t have to see the Nutcracker, just because you’ve gone every year since you were in the second grade. Instead of scurrying from event to event, try picking one or two outings that you really want to attend. As for the others, people really will understand when you tell them that you simply cannot participate.
  • Exercise. Most of us tend to skip our workouts during the holidays, yet this is the time when we need the benefits of exercise the most. Exercise releases endorphins into your bloodstream that help you stay upbeat, alert, and energetic.

Set an intention to lower your stress level this holiday season. Just a few small changes can really pay off when it comes to your emotional, physical, and mental well-being.
